Teen escapes mother's control after six years of isolation
Alex Batty, 20, has revealed the harrowing details of his six-year ordeal after being taken abroad by his mother and grandfather in 2017, detailing a life of enforced isolation, conspiracy theories and a desperate flight to freedom.
A childhood stolen: the beginning of a nomadic existence
The story began in October 2017 when 11-year-old Alex travelled with his mother, Melanie Batty, and grandfather, David Batty, from the UK to Spain. What was intended as a short holiday in Marbella quickly spiralled into a clandestine existence. He described a life spent moving between rural communities in Spain, Morocco, and south-west France, effectively cut off from mainstream society and denied access to formal education.
“I just wanted to go home” – a breaking point
Speaking in a new BBC documentary, Kidnapped By My Mum, Alex recounted a pivotal moment: “We used to sit at a cafe quite often and the school was right next to it. I’d hear the school bell ring, the kids would come out of school, and it really made me miss it. I walked up to my mum and I cried my eyes out because you know, I’d had enough.” He alleged that his mother exerted considerable influence, pushing anti-establishment and spiritual ideologies, shaping his worldview in ways he now deeply regrets.
A calculated escape
In December 2023, at the age of 17, Alex orchestrated his escape from a remote area in the French Pyrenees. He was discovered by a delivery driver who brought him to the authorities. Remarkably, he identified himself to the driver as Alex Batty and recounted being ‘kidnapped’ by his mother. This led to a swift reunion with his grandmother, Susan Caruana, who had been his legal guardian, marking the end of a devastating six-year separation.
Police response and closure
Assistant Chief Constable Chris Sykes of Greater Manchester Police stated, “We were relieved and overjoyed to receive news from the French Authorities that they believe Alex Batty had been located safe and well, more than 6 years after his disappearance. This is a huge moment for Alex, for his Family and for the community in Oldham.” While the initial investigation into potential abduction concluded with no charges possible, the case remains a stark reminder of the complexities of Family dynamics and the lengths to which a child might go to reclaim their freedom.
Moving forward
Since his return to the UK, Alex has reportedly completed his GCSEs and recently became a father. The documentary offers a poignant glimpse into his efforts to rebuild his life, a testament to his resilience and determination.
