Audemars piguet & swatch's royal pop sparks global frenzy, sells for thousands

The unlikely union of luxury watchmakeraudemars piguet and affordable timepiece giant Swatch has resulted in a global phenomenon with the release of the 'Royal Pop'.

Unconventional design sparks debate

Instead of the affordable wristwatch many expected, the Royal Pop is a non-wrist-worn design featuring a lanyard-type hanging strap attachment.

This unconventional approach has generated buzz, lines, and controversy worldwide, with fans and critics alike weighing in on the brand's bold move.

Despite the initial shock, demand has been high, with the eight available models retailing between $400 and $420.

High craftsmanship at an affordable price

One of the standout features of the Royal Pop is its level of craftsmanship, considering its price point.

The iconic screw-down octagonal bezel, a hallmark of AP's legendary Royal Oak collection, is made of bioceramic, a specialty of Swatch, featuring a brushed finish.

The petite tapisserie dial is also exquisitely crafted, replicating the decorative grooves that radiate concentrically from the central axis.

Additionally, the sapphire crystal case back features an anti-reflective coating on both sides, a detail watch enthusiasts will appreciate.

The lanyard attachment is press-fit and removable, with three different lengths available separately online.

Notably, the Royal Pop houses the newly manufactured hand-wound 'Sistem51' movement, a development from Swatch.

Introduced in 2013, the Sistem51 featured a mechanical automatic winding movement made of 51 parts, assembled through automated manufacturing.

Now, a hand-wound version boasts a 90-hour power reserve, equipped with a Nivachron balance spring, which is also used in high-end watches.

The design allows for a clear view of the mainspring through the barrel, serving as a power reserve indicator.

The Sistem51 movement is displayed through a pad-printed logo in a font reminiscent of the Royal Oak on the sapphire crystal case back.

A marketing strategy for the ages

Swatch's gradual release of information, starting in early April, was an ingenious move that allowed fans to speculate and engage with the mystery.

On social media, fans shared predictions, followed leaks, created speculative images, and lined up on release day.

While the Royal Pop's reception has been mixed, its impact cannot be denied, sparking a global conversation about the future of timepieces and the power of unexpected collaborations.
