The charming town, a spin-off of Death in Paradise, has captivated viewers with its quaint streets and picturesque coastline. But the reality is, Shipton Abbott isn't a place you can actually visit.
Where is beyond paradise filmed?
The series, which follows DI Humphrey Goodman as he settles into life in the Devon town after marrying his love interest, is actually a patchwork of locations across Devon and Cornwall. This decision, according to executive producer Tony Jordan, stemmed from a desire for a familiar, scenic backdrop. “I remember growing up as a kid and my family holidays were in Devon, staying in caravans in Westwood Ho. I love Cornwall and the West Country and lived in Bristol for a while, so it’s very familiar to me,” he explained. The result is a setting that feels both authentically British and undeniably appealing.
Looe, in Cornwall, stands in for Shipton Abbott’s seafront and beach. The town’s thriving fishing industry played a key role in the selection, offering a sense of community that the production team sought. The East Beach, frequently featured in the show, is a testament to this.
The high street scenes are filmed in Launceston, Cornwall, an ancient market town that lends a distinctly characterful feel to the fictional Shipton Abbott. But the locations don't stop there. Martha’s cafe, Ten Mile Kitchen, initially resided in The Stables Cafe at Port Eliot House and Gardens, a stunning Grade-I listed property. The cafe later moved to The Sardine Factory in Looe, a restaurant noted for its Michelin Bib Gourmand award and modern Cornish cuisine.
Humphrey and Martha’s houseboat isn't a castle, but it’s moored near Pentillie Castle and Estate in Saltash, Cornwall. The estate also provides the backdrop for Martha’s mother's cottage. The police station, a central hub for the crime drama, is actually The Guildhall in Looe, a Grade II listed building dating back to 1877.
The careful selection of these locations is a testament to the production team’s commitment to creating a believable and visually stunning world for Beyond Paradise. The West Country’s diverse landscapes and strong sense of community proved to be the perfect fit.
