Discovering a different side of crete
My recent sister getaway to Zeus Eleva Mirabello Bay revealed a Crete often overlooked by the typical tourist trail. The island, Greece’s largest, remains a popular European destination, but venturing east unveils a quieter, more authentic experience.
We timed our visit for the tail end of summer, a perfect opportunity for a reset after a hectic month. The region’s allure isn’t just in its landscapes; it’s in the understated charm and the sense of space that allows for genuine rejuvenation.

Dining options are plentiful, with five restaurants to choose from. Mezedaki, the hotel’s beachfront Greek grill, quickly became a favorite. The seafood was exceptional, and the restaurant readily accommodated my sister’s vegetarian preferences. However, be prepared for queues at peak times.
Beyond the hotel, the location is a major asset. The property is a short walk from bars, restaurants, and scenic walking paths, with a beautiful beach right at its doorstep. A boat trip to Spinalonga Island, a former leper colony with a haunting history, is a must. Exploring the island’s abandoned houses offered a poignant glimpse into the past.
Agios Nikolaos, a nearby town, is equally charming, offering a slower pace and a collection of tavernas, shops, and ceramics. A guided tour of the surrounding villages and the Monastery of Kremast provided a peaceful counterpoint to the coastal bustle.
